SASSA and Postbank at Odds Over Cancelled Grant Payment Agreement
Postbank sent SASSA a legal letter over R116 million after SASSA cancelled its grant payment agreement. Beneficiaries are told payments continue as normal.
A dispute between the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) and Postbank surfaced in May 2026, alongside Postbank’s withdrawal from Post Office branches. According to TimesLIVE and the Sowetan, SASSA cancelled a long-standing agreement that made Postbank its primary grant payer, and Postbank issued a legal letter over an outstanding R116 million that the agency refuses to pay.
What beneficiaries were told
Both organisations stressed that grant recipients would not be affected. Payments continue through retail partners and Standard Bank ATMs, and SASSA said its payment schedule would go ahead as planned.

Government agencies, banks and SASSA all ask for a residential address. Use your street address with the street code for your suburb, and keep it the same across your records so documents match.
