Postal Codes on Proof of Address: Getting FICA, RICA and Applications Right
Banks, networks and employers ask for proof of address. Why the postal code on your documents should match, and which code goes in each address field.
Opening a bank account, registering a SIM card or applying for a job usually means providing proof of address. Mismatched details are a common reason applications are queried, and the postal code is an easy one to get wrong.
Residential address vs postal address
- Residential (physical) address: where you live. Use the street code for your suburb.
- Postal address: where you receive letters. If it is a PO Box or private bag, use the PO Box code. If it is the same as your home, repeat the residential address and street code.
Keep it consistent
Write the address the same way it appears on your proof of address, for example a municipal account, lease or bank statement. If that document shows an old or wrong code, it is worth asking the issuer to correct it so future documents match.
Check before you submit

Frequently asked questions
Can I use my PO Box as my residential address?
No. A residential address must be where you live. A PO Box is only a postal address.
My municipal bill has a different postal code from the one listed here. What should I do?
Check that the suburb matches. If it does and the bill uses an old or PO Box code, ask the municipality to update it, and let us know if you believe our listing is wrong.
