Postal Code, Suburb, Area or Municipality? How South African Addresses Fit Together
Suburb, post office area, city, municipality and postal code all appear on forms, and they are not the same thing. A plain explanation of each, with examples.
South African forms ask for a suburb, a city, sometimes a municipality, and a postal code. They overlap, but each means something different, and mixing them up is a common reason for delays.
Suburb
The neighbourhood where the address is, such as Sea Point, Soweto’s Orlando West or Hatfield. This is the most important line for couriers.
Post office area
The Post Office groups suburbs under the main post office that serves them, which we call the area. Rosebank and Melville are both in the Johannesburg area, for example. You rarely write the area on an address, but it explains why suburbs share codes.
City or town
The place name you write on the line after the suburb, such as Johannesburg, Cape Town or Durban.
Municipality
The local government that runs the place: City of Johannesburg, eThekwini (Durban) or Nelson Mandela Bay (Gqeberha). You need it for municipal accounts and some government forms, but not for postal addresses.
Postal code
The four digits that route mail to a delivery area. One code can cover many suburbs, and big cities have dozens of codes. Most suburbs have both a street code and a PO Box code.
Putting it together
On an envelope: name, street, suburb, city, postal code. Our addressing guide has full examples.
Frequently asked questions
Is the post office area the same as the city?
Often, but not always. Midrand, for example, is listed under the Halfway House post office area.
Do I need to write the municipality on mail?
No. Write the suburb, city and postal code. The municipality is for municipal and government records.
