Postbank Stops Cash Services at Post Office Branches
From 1 May 2026, Postbank customers can no longer deposit or withdraw cash at Post Office branches. SASSA says grant payments are not affected.
Postbank ended cash deposits, withdrawals and related services at South African Post Office branches on 1 May 2026. Customers now use Standard Bank branches and ATMs and participating retailers instead, subject to those channels’ limits and fees.
What about social grants?
Postbank and SASSA both said the change does not affect grant beneficiaries. Grants continue to be paid through the existing channels, including retail partners and Standard Bank ATMs, and SASSA’s chief executive said May payments would go ahead as scheduled.
Why it happened
Postbank was formally separated from the Post Office in September 2023 and has been building its own channels since then. The change came amid a dispute between Postbank and SASSA over a cancelled grant-payment agreement and an outstanding amount Postbank says it is owed.
What it means for your post
Post Office branches still handle mail, parcels and PO Boxes. Postal codes do not change. If you collect mail from a PO Box, use your PO Box code; for deliveries to your home, use the street code.
