On 12 June 2026, the South African Post Office’s business rescue practitioners applied to the Pretoria High Court to end the business rescue that began in July 2023. They asked the court to confirm that the rescue plan has been substantially implemented, which would allow them to file the notice that formally concludes the process.

Why they say it is time

  • Revenue for the year to 31 March 2026 was reported at about R1.54 billion, with a much smaller loss than the year before.
  • Reports describe large debt settlements with creditors and a return to a positive net asset value on paper.
  • Costs were cut sharply through branch closures and retrenchments.

The caveats

Acting CEO Fathima Gany said the application does not mean the Post Office has already left business rescue. The R3.8 billion in extra funding the plan relies on had still not been paid, and two employee benefit funds later opposed the application.

What it means for you

Postal codes are not affected. If you use a PO Box, keep an eye on Post Office notices about your branch. For parcels, a street address with the correct street code remains the most reliable option.
