Johannesburg does not have a single postal code. The city centre uses 2001 for street addresses and 2000 for PO Boxes, but every suburb has its own code, and the metro stretches from Soweto in the south-west to Midrand in the north. These are the codes people look up most.

East Rand and West Rand

Soweto has its own set of codes in the 1800s. See our Soweto postal codes guide.

Tips for Johannesburg addresses

  • Use the suburb’s own code, not 2001. 2001 only covers the central business district and a few neighbouring suburbs.
  • Check extensions. Many suburbs have numbered extensions, such as Ext 1 and Ext 2. Extensions usually share the main suburb’s code, but not always, so look yours up.
  • Estates and complexes. Large estates in Fourways, Midrand and Sunninghill can sit close to suburb boundaries. Use the suburb shown on your municipal account or lease.
  • Street or box? Couriers need the street code. Use the PO Box code only for a PO Box or private bag.
