Graaff-Reinet Is Now Robert Sobukwe Town: What It Means for Mail
Graaff-Reinet was renamed Robert Sobukwe Town in February 2026, drawing both support and objections. Its postal codes stay the same.
Graaff-Reinet in the Eastern Cape, one of South Africa’s oldest towns, was officially renamed Robert Sobukwe Town. The change was gazetted in February 2026 as part of a batch of 21 geographical name changes, honouring the founder of the Pan Africanist Congress, who was born in the town.
A contested change
The renaming has divided opinion. In March 2026 IOL reported a march in support of the new name, while EWN reported organised opposition, with objection forms submitted to government. Reports describe the old and new names co-existing on signs, maps and in everyday use for now.
Postal codes do not change
Renaming a town does not change its postal codes. The Post Office’s list still uses Graaff-Reinet, and the codes below apply under either name:
| Suburb or town | Street | PO Box |
|---|---|---|
| Robert Sobukwe Town (Graaff-Reinet) | 6280 | 6280 |
You can search for the town by either name on ZarPostalCodes. For other renamed towns, see renamed towns and their postal codes.
