Amazon Prime Launches in South Africa, Raising the Stakes on Delivery
Amazon launched Prime in South Africa in June 2026 at R59 a month. Delivery subscriptions are the new battleground, and accurate addresses matter.
Amazon launched its Prime subscription in South Africa in June 2026, priced at R59 a month, according to World Wide Worx’s Online Retail in South Africa 2026 report. The report names subscriptions and delivery economics as major competitive tests for online retail this year.
How the market looks
- Before the Prime launch, Amazon was used by 12.7% of online shoppers, behind Takealot, Shein and Checkers Sixty60.
- Takealot’s own subscription, TakealotMORE, accounted for more than a quarter of the group’s gross merchandise value within two years.
- Grocery delivery subscriptions, such as Shoprite’s, compete on the same promise of unlimited free delivery.
Fast delivery starts with the right address
Next-day and same-day promises only work when the courier can find you. Before you save an address in a shopping app:
- Use the street code of the suburb, not a PO Box code.
- Add the complex or estate name and unit number.
- Add a mobile number so the driver can call at the gate.
