East London Is Officially KuGompo City: Postal Codes Stay the Same
East London was renamed KuGompo City in February 2026. Its postal codes, 5201 for street addresses and 5200 for PO Boxes, do not change.
East London in the Eastern Cape is now officially KuGompo City. The name change was approved by Minister Gayton McKenzie in late January 2026 and gazetted in early February as part of a batch of 21 geographical name changes.
Why “KuGompo City”
The original proposal, KuGompo, was rejected earlier because a small place with that name already existed in the province. Adding “City” resolved the clash. Public consultations were held in 2025, though some commentators have questioned how many people took part.
Postal codes do not change
