Cabinet approved a new board for the South African Post Office in June 2026. News24 reported that the board is chaired by Regina Sizakele Madlala, with Margaret Mosibudi Phiri as deputy chair. Communications Minister Solly Malatsi called it a significant step towards the Post Office exiting business rescue.

Why a board matters

A company in business rescue is run by its practitioners. For the Post Office to leave business rescue, it needs a board to take over governance. The appointment therefore removed a procedural hurdle to the exit application filed later that month.

Reaction

  • The SAFTU and DEPACU unions welcomed the inclusion of labour representation, but said a board alone would not solve the Post Office’s structural problems.
  • TechCentral noted the board arrived without the funding the turnaround plan depends on.
