Post Office Branch Network Shrinks to About 657 After Closures

The Post Office has closed hundreds of branches during business rescue. What the smaller network means for PO Box holders and the codes you use.

The South African Post Office now runs a much smaller branch network than before business rescue began in 2023. Reports in 2026 put the number of permanently closed branches at around 366, leaving about 657 open, alongside the retrenchment of more than 4,300 staff. Different reports give slightly different totals, so check the Post Office’s own notices for the latest figures.

Why branches closed

The closures are part of the business rescue plan, which aims to cut costs and focus the network on viable sites. The plan has also depended on government funding that has not been fully paid, which has slowed the turnaround.

What it means for PO Boxes and postal codes

  • Postal codes do not change when a branch closes. A street code describes a delivery area and stays the same.
  • PO Box holders may be moved. If your branch closed, your box may have been relocated to another branch, which can come with a different PO Box code. Use the code on your latest Post Office correspondence and update it with your bank, employer and suppliers.
  • Street addresses are the safer choice for parcels. Couriers deliver to physical addresses using the street code.
